Knee Pain Q & A

What causes knee pain?

Millions of Americans experience knee pain. Knee pain occurs when there is a condition or injury affecting any of the bony structures found in the knee joint, such as the femur, tibia, fibula, and the kneecap or the soft tissue of the knee including the ligaments and cartilage. Knee pain is typically categorized as acute injuries, medical conditions, and chronic/overuse conditions.

Acute injuries include:

  • Fractures
  • Ligament injuries where ligaments are torn or injured
  • Meniscus injuries where the shock-absorbing cartilage is injured
  • Dislocation of the joint

Medical conditions include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout arthritis
  • Septic arthritis

Chronic Use/Overuse conditions include:

  • Patellar tendinitis
  • Osteoarthritis

When should I seek medical treatment for knee pain?

If you experience knee pain that doesn’t get better with rest and ice, you should seek medical attention. If you experience any of the following conditions with your knee pain you should make an appointment immediately.

  • Cannot bend the joint
  • Cannot walk without discomfort or cannot walk at all
  • Inflammation and swelling
  • Deformity
  • Extreme pain
  • Pain at night or when inactive

How does the team at Active Medical Center relieve knee pain?

The medical team at Active Medical Center provides a variety of therapies and treatments to provide knee pain relief while healing the underlying condition causing the pain. Patients will receive customized treatment plans that address their specific needs following a comprehensive physical exam. Once the doctor knows the root cause of the patient’s knee pain, treatment will begin so that patients can get back to what they love and avoid surgery. Treatment may include joint injections, orthotics, chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, and corrective care. At Active Medical Center, patients also have access to innovative Hyaluronic Acid Therapy.

What is Hyaluronic Acid Therapy?

Hyaluronic Acid or “HA” Therapy is a treatment for knee pain that is entirely drug and surgery-free. It’s a supplementary injection of hyaluronan into the knee. Hyaluronan is a naturally occurring substance found in joint cartilage and synovial fluid. It’s a lubricant that cushions the joint, allowing the bones to move smoothly against each other. During this quick in-office treatment, the doctor may numb the knee, and then remove any fluid in the knee with arthrocentesis, finally injecting the hyaluronic acid fluid into the joint. Most patients find the treatment painless and, after a couple of days of avoiding strenuous physical activity, are back to normal. The number of treatments needed depends on the condition of the patient, and the doctors at Active Medical Center will provide customized advice on the best form of treatment.
